Save the Poipu Banyan Trees
Kauai County plans to remove banyan trees by Keoki's Restaurant along Poipu Road to create a safer and more efficient traffic circle at the busy intersection.
These majestic banyan trees have been a significant part of the South Shore landscape for many years. More than just trees; they provide much-needed shade in the South Side heat, contributing to the community’s comfort and well-being. The trees are symbolic of the plantation character that defines the Koloa area. Their unique, sprawling canopies not only enhance the beauty of Poipu Road but also serve as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage.
And in a world grappling with climate change, the trees play a role in absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
As Kauai public places continue to lose their big trees; the presence of these beautiful banyans is a solace, a connection with our roots as a community, and showpieces for our visitors.
But the banyans are in danger of removal as part of this county road improvement project.
We urge Kauai County to recognize the value these trees bring to Poipu and the broader Koloa community. At the same time, we support the county’s safety and efficiency plans for the area.
Kauai Outdoor Circle advocates for redesigning the intersection plan with a smaller roundabout that will still achieve the transportation goals while also preserving the beauty, heritage, and greenery of the landmark banyans.
Please join us in protecting what makes the Poipu Neighborhood unique and conserving this piece of our natural heritage for future generations by signing this petition
Together, we can make a difference and ensure these beautiful landmarks remain a part of our community’s fabric for years to come.
